What Kind of Recognition Do You Get After Completing a Test & Tag Course?

If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering whether you receive any formal certification or accreditation when you complete a Test & Tag training course. The answer depends largely on what kind of accreditation you’re seeking, so let’s break it down — and how to choose a trustworthy training provider.

Is There a “National Qualification” for Test & Tag in New Zealand?

At present, there is no training provider in New Zealand that issues certification under the national qualification scheme NZQA.

Additionally, you might come across providers claiming to be a “nationally accredited RTO (Registered Training Organisation).” However, note that an RTO qualification applies to Australian-registered organisations — so any “RTO accreditation” listed on a New Zealand website is irrelevant with respect to NZQA or formal national recognition.
Therefore, if you’re expecting a nationally recognised diploma or qualification similar to those from NZQA-accredited programmes, you may be disappointed.

What You Do Actually Receive: Certificate & Competent-Person Recognition

While national accreditation is not available, you will — upon successful completion — be awarded a competency certificate and usually a license or ID card.

Many providers don’t issue a license with a photo-ID, but a reputable and experienced provider will — and in our view, a photo-ID card is essential.

Furthermore, when selecting your training provider, ensure they have real-world practical experience in test and tag — not just theoretical knowledge. Providers who also do actual testing and tagging will be better suited to offer practical insights.

In short: while not a “national diploma,” you obtain a valid Test & Tag competency certificate and, in some cases, a license/ID that employers and clients can recognise — which qualifies you as a “competent person” to conduct testing and tagging under the standard rules of AS/NZS 3760:2022.

What to Consider When Choosing a Training Provider

When evaluating providers, here’s what you should verify:

  • Photo-ID license — A certificate alone may not be sufficient; a license card with your photo helps prove your identity and competence to third parties.

  • Practical experience and real-world testing background — The provider should actually perform testing and tagging themselves, not just teach theory.

  • Recognition under relevant electrical-work licensing bodies (if applicable) — Some providers are also registered with official organisations such as Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB); this can add credibility.

Example of What You Get from Our One-Day Test & Tag Course

If you choose our one-day in-person programme — the same structure as on our “Test and Tag Training – One Day Course” page — here’s what’s involved and what you’ll receive:

  • Theory instruction on test & tag procedures, standards, and safety.

  • Hands-on practical demonstration and experience using a PAT tester.

  • Written and practical assessments to verify your competence.

  • After passing: issuance of a competency certificate plus a photo-ID license card.

This equips you with the status of a “competent person” to perform test and tag on electrical appliances, as per AS/NZS 3760 standard — even though it does not confer a national qualification.
