If you or someone else in your company are looking to become competent in testing and tagging electrical equipment in New Zealand in 2026, now’s a great time to plan your training with Metrotest – the largest Kiwi owned and operated test and tag training provider, with almost three decades of experience!
What is Test & Tag Training?
Test and tag training teaches you how to inspect, test, and label portable electrical appliances safely and correctly under the AS/NZS 3760:2022 standard. The one-day in-person courses provide both the theory and hands-on practical experience needed to confidently and safely perform electrical safety checks using a PAT (Portable Appliance Testers). You will get the opportunity to use a range of PATs and be trained by Metrotest’s electrical experienced trainers with real testing experience!
Successful participants are deemed competent to perform testing and tagging and receive:
- A competency certificate
- A Metrotest Photo ID licence card
- Real lifetime back up and support
Being deemed competent on the day by our electrically experienced trainers ensures that you can go away from training and confidently and safely test and tag your own or your companies equipment. You don’t need to be a prescribed electrical worker to perform testing and tagging.

What to Expect on the Day
A typical one-day face-to-face Metrotest course includes:
- Theory instruction — what the AS/NZS 3760 standard requires and real electrical safety
- Practical demonstrations of PAT equipment
- Hands-on testing practice under trainer supervision
- A written and practical assessment
- Insider tips from trainers with real industry experience
Don’t worry if you don’t own a PAT tester yet — Metrotest provides PAT’s for use during the course and will even help you understand what to look for in a tester if you decide to purchase one later.
Who Should Attend?
This training is ideal for:
- Small business owners wanting to do their own test and tag
- Health and safety staff responsible for equipment inspection
- Facilities managers and workplace compliance officers
- Tradies, team leaders, or operators who handle electrical equipment
- Government workers from all sectors, including event centres, hospitals or schools
Even if you’re experienced, refresher training helps keep skills sharp and ensures you’re aligned with current best practices — something both trainers and safety professionals recommend. In fact, there has never been a better time than now to get refresher training, as the New Zealand Electrical Regulations, as of November 2025, have cited the AS/NZS 3760: 2022, superseding the 2010 version. There are some serious changes in the updated standard that you should be aware of it you are doing testing on a regular basis.
