It’s a new year — a great time to explore training options, especially online. Here at Metrotest, we’ve got big plans for 2026. With more online training courses added in late 2024, we want to bring you up to speed on exactly what to expect — whether you choose online or face‑to‑face training.
What’s the difference between Online and Face‑to‑Face Training?
Whether you complete your training online or in person, you receive the same quality training — you’ll be deemed competent to test and tag by the end.
- Online training gives you flexibility: you can learn at your own pace, in your own time.
- Face‑to‑face training gives you the chance to handle real equipment, see other trainees’ testers, and learn in a more hands‑on, social environment.
- With online training you still get one‑on‑one time with an experienced, electrically qualified trainer — so you’re not disadvantaged just because you’re remote.
At Metrotest, we kept both options because some people prefer the flexibility of online learning while others prefer the hands-on nature of in-person classes.
Online Training Options Available in 2026
Metrotest offers a range of online courses to suit different levels of need and experience. Here are the main ones:
Bronze, Silver and Gold Course — Standard AS/NZS 3760 Training
- We’ve broken down the initial training into three levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) to make learning modular and less overwhelming.
- Bronze: Free — ideal if you want to try online training with minimal commitment.
- Silver & Gold: Full competency courses — priced together at $310.00 (incl. GST).
- Together these levels cover everything you need to safely and competently test and tag electrical equipment.
AS/NZS 3760 Online Refresher Course
- Designed for those who have already completed the initial course but want to refresh their knowledge, which is especially useful when standards or safety regulations update.
- Price: $144.90 (incl. GST)
- Good for companies using Metrotest’s voluntary license system to ensure staff remain up to date.
3‑Phase Online Training Course (for Advanced Users)
- For those who have completed the initial course and want to upgrade skills to test 3‑phase equipment.
- Practical assessment can be done even if you don’t own expensive 3‑phase equipment — Metrotest facilitates so you can still qualify.
- Price: $210.00 (incl. GST)
AS/NZS 3551 Medical Equipment Training / Refresher Course
- This course is oriented toward testing medical equipment or equipment used in medical environments — which require different standards.
- Metrotest is one of the only providers offering this online across New Zealand (and much of Australia).
- Price: Initial course $494.50 (incl. GST), Refresher $276.00 (incl. GST)
Test & Tag Standards – Safety Managers Course
- A free course aimed at managers, company owners, or anyone who wants to understand the standards and what to expect from a test and tag program.
- Useful for those who oversee safety compliance rather than carry out testing themselves.
Why We Offer Online Training — Flexibility Without Compromise
At Metrotest, we believe you don’t need to compromise on quality for convenience. Our online courses:
- Include all the theory and practical knowledge required to test and tag safely and correctly.
- Allow for one-on-one assessments with qualified electrical trainers, not group sessions where quality can suffer.
- Provide the same certification and licence‑card as face-to-face courses once you pass.
- Are ideal for people who want to learn at their own pace — no strict scheduling, no travel, and no need for your own tester (Metrotest can supply a loan PAT tester if needed).
Whether you’re new to test and tag, looking to update your credentials, or expanding into medical‑equipment testing, online training provides a flexible but rigorous pathway — and Metrotest supports you every step of the way.
What Happens After You Complete Training
Once you successfully complete the practical assessment (online or in-person), you’ll be:
- Deemed “competent” to carry out test and tag procedures under the relevant standards (e.g. AS/NZS 3760, AS/NZS 3551 for medical equipment).
- Awarded an industry-recognised certificate and a Metrotest Photo ID license card — the same as in-person trainees.
- Eligible to test portable electrical appliances (or medical equipment, if trained under AS/NZS 3551) — which helps you (or your company) demonstrate competency and compliance with safety guidelines.
While test and tag may not always be legally required, it remains a globally accepted method to ensure electrical safety and reduce the risk of hazards — especially in workplaces, hire services, medical facilities, or any environment where electrical equipment is repeatedly used.
