One Day Course

Metrotest has been running test and tag courses for close to three decades, designed to help Kiwi and Australian businesses remain not only compliant but electrically safe in their workplaces.

Our fully comprehensive one-day test and tag course is a great way to ensure you are trained properly by qualified professionals – from New Zealand’s largest Kiwi-owned and operated test and tag training provider.

What types of businesses should do test and tag?

Basically, if you are a New Zealand company, you should be performing testing and tagging on a regular basis. Many larger companies will employ a third-party provider to do the testing for them. However, while that can have its benefits, the cost can add up quickly if you are not careful and are you sure they are doing the testing correctly?

This is where test and tag training comes in. According to the main standard around test and tag – AS/NZS 3760 – you don’t have to be a qualified electrical worker to perform testing and tagging; you simply need to be deemed competent, and the most common way to do that (and prove it) is to be properly trained by a reputable provider like Metrotest.

Test and tag training is a good option for all sizes of businesses, but particularly for small to medium-sized companies who can have their own staff trained and save big on costs, while ensuring testing is being done correctly.

Some examples include:

  • The typical tradie or small trade outfit (plumbers, painters, builders, etc.)
    • School caretakers in small or large schools/colleges
    • Hospitality staff or hotel operators

Where are one-day courses held?

Metrotest frequently holds courses across New Zealand, including the main centres: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. Normally, courses are run once every couple of months, or every month, depending on the location.

We also have the largest regional coverage in the country, running courses throughout the year in Blenheim, Nelson, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Tauranga (these are run less frequently, but still regularly).

Want to know about our 2026 schedule for one-day face-to-face test and tag courses? Check out our schedule here for dates and locations. We are super hyped for 2026 and are once again leading the way with organised courses to help train Kiwi companies to meet their test and tag needs.

Can I just show up on the day?

While we love to be flexible, unfortunately no – you can’t just turn up on the day. We can, however, still sign trainees up within 24 hours before a course. Anything later than that can compromise the quality of the training we provide.

We use electrically-experienced and test and tag-experienced trainers who are incredibly professional, and we don’t want them turning up to class with “surprise trainees” they weren’t expecting.

Signing up is extremely easy. You can do it on our website, or simply give us a call and our friendly staff will take care of the entire process for you or your team.

How does the one-day training work?

On the day:

  1. Arrive at the designated time and venue (provided after sign-up). If you have a PAT tester, bring it with you.
  2. The trainer will take you through the theory of testing and tagging and also perform practical demonstrations.
  3. You will complete both a written and a practical assessment. Once successfully completed, you will have passed and be deemed competent to test and tag.

Once you pass, you will be provided with an industry-leading certificate and a Metrotest photo ID card proving you have been deemed competent to test and tag at the time of your training.

There is plenty of time allowed to ask questions and get familiar with different testers (including your own) on the day, with our expert trainers who have extensive experience across a wide range of PAT testers.
